    GOOGLE CLASSROOM

All assignments will be assigned through Google Classroom daily. Links to assignments and other materials will be available through Google Classroom. Paper copies will also be available for some assignments.

    CLASS MATERIALS

Bring the following class materials to class every day. Keep yourself organized! Do NOT throw anything away until the semester ends and hold on to pertinent materials for the year.

      Chromebook → charged everyday

▶  college-ruled notebook AND two pocket folder

    ▶  text assigned by teacher

    ▶ writing utensils:

    * 1-3 pencils

    * ONE highlighter

    METHODS OF EVALUATION

Your performance will be based upon PRODUCT (80%) and PROCESS (20%) assessments. Both summative and formative assessments--including (but not limited to) exams/tests/quizzes, writing pieces, speeches,  projects/presentations, and homework--will be used. Rubrics will be used to communicate expectations.

PROCESS ASSIGNMENTS (20% weighted) -- Process assignments will be accepted one day past the due date and/or the due time for a 50% reduction in grade.

PRODUCT ASSIGNMENTS (80% weighted) -- Product assignments are typically due on a set date and time. Late submissions will result in a 10% reduction for each week the assignment is late. (This could lead to a ZERO POINT VALUE. Please do not let this happen!)

    *IMPORTANT NOTE:

Failure to complete a PRODUCT assignment will result in an “incomplete” grade (designated “M” in Progress Book).  Students WILL NOT RECEIVE CREDIT FOR THE ENTIRE SEMESTER COURSE if they have ANY “incomplete” grades. Students MUST pass two out of three-semester assessments (9 weeks/9 weeks/semester exam) and have NO incompletes in order to receive semester credit for this course.

*Keep in mind that English is a course that you have to pass every year of your high school career. Do it the first time!

    SHS COMMON GRADING SCALE

    SHS COMMON MANAGEMENT PLAN

    Expectations:

    1.  Be in your assigned seat and prepared to work from bell to bell.

    2.  Abstain from grooming in the classroom.

    3.  Be courteous and respect the rights and property of others.

    4.  Heads up.  No earbuds. Hoods down.

Consequences: Consequences apply for each expectation.  Consequences start anew at each semester.

1st offense: A verbal warning will be given when a classroom expectation is not followed (unless the discipline code calls for a referral).

2nd offense: A second verbal warning will be offered (again, unless the discipline code calls for a referral).

3rd offense: If the problem persists after the verbal warnings, the student will be assigned a detention, which will be accompanied by a telephone call to the parent/guardian.

4th offense: If the same problem persists after a detention, a discipline referral will be given.

5th plus offense(s): A discipline referral will be given.

Policy For Severe Behavior: Severely disruptive behavior such as repeated/extreme disruptions, verbal/physical assaults, or verbal abuse of staff will result in immediate referral to the office.

    ADDITIONAL CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS

    Beginning of class procedures:

    a. Read the daily agenda (found in Google Classroom)

    b. Complete the daily “Do Now”/Bellwork

    Progress Book:

Please log in often to keep track of your progress in all classes.

    Absences:

You are responsible for all work due to absence. Failure to do so will result in a “zero” or “incomplete” grade for that assignment. The DAILY AGENDA will be posted on Google Classroom. Handouts will be linked into Google Classroom. Printed copies will be available in the absent files located near the back of the classroom.

    Electronic Devices, Cell Phones:

    1. Phones are to be stored in your designated slot at the beginning of the period. Phones may be retrieved at the end of the class as you exit the classroom.

    2. If you use your phone when you are not supposed to, your device will be confiscated and returned to you at a later time in the day.

    3. If asked for your device, please hand it over politely and quietly in order to minimize further disruption. Refusal to turn over the device is considered insubordination and may result in disciplinary consequences provided by administrators.

    Hall Passes:

Students will be issued THREE hall passes each quarter. Additional passes will not be granted. Each unused pass will be worth five extra process points at the end of the quarter. (Exception: Submission of all three passes will be worth 20 rather than 15 extra process points total).

    Substitute Teachers:

Being a substitute teacher is an extremely challenging job. We expect every student to be on his/her best behavior when a substitute teacher is assigned. If a student is identified as disruptive and/or problematic, the student will either be issued a detention or an office referral.

    Cheating:

If you are caught cheating, you will receive a zero, an office referral, and a phone call home. If cheating occurs between students, both the student who shares his/her work AND the person who copies it will suffer the same consequences. We expect you to do your own work and to ensure that no one copies it. Plagiarism, especially on a PRODUCT grade, is unacceptable. Severe consequences will be assigned. NOTE: Please know that Google Classroom now has a plagiarism checker for teachers to use.

    FINAL THOUGHTS

Your English teacher is always willing and available to discuss any aspect of this course with you.  If you have any questions, concerns, or issues you wish to discuss, please set up a time to meet with Mrs. Brown. Thank you!
